A Vino de Pago is, ultimately, one produced with grapes from the place itself under conditions that are distinct from those of nearby areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"653\" data-end=\"1047\">We are talking about a concept created in the year 2000 by a group of producers from the two Castillas to differentiate their wines from those of industrial wineries which, by virtue of their large production volumes, used grapes from various origins. The <strong data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"920\">terroir<\/strong> \u2014the land\u2014 is the key here. Its character. Its personality. Its excellence. Their wines, of high quality and made from more than 40 grape varieties \u2014both red and white\u2014 are backed by high ratings in national and international wine guides, and are required to have been on the market for a minimum of five years. In terms of production, they generate more than four million bottles per year, which significantly supply both the domestic market and exports.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"2296\">All those that are, are here\u2026<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"2296\">The list of certified wineries includes: Aalto, Abad\u00eda Retuerta, Alonso del Yerro, Alvear, Astobiza, Belondrade, Calzadilla, Can R\u00e0fols dels Caus, C\u00e9rvoles Celler S.L., Cortijo Los Aguilares, Dehesa del Carrizal, Bodegas Enrique Mendoza, Fillaboa, Finca Moncloa, Finca Sandoval, Finca Valpiedra, Fuentes del Silencio, Bodegas Gramona, Manuel Manzaneque, Marqu\u00e9s de Gri\u00f1\u00f3n Family Estates, Mas Doix, Bodegas Mauro, San Rom\u00e1n Bodegas y Vi\u00f1edos, Mustiguillo, Secastilla, Pago de Vallegarc\u00eda, J. Chivite Family Estates, Numanthia, Palacio Quemado, Propiedad de Ar\u00ednzano, Sei Solo, and Valdespino.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2490\">The wineries are located across ten autonomous communities: Galicia, Castilla y Le\u00f3n, Navarra, La Rioja, Arag\u00f3n, Catalonia, Valencian Community, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, and Andalusia.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2490\">Vinos de Pago: requirements\u2026<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2490\">The high quality level of Vinos de Pago corresponds with the conditions their producers must meet. The most immediate ones have to do with the origin of the grape and the wine itself. As stated in Article 24 of Law 24\/2003 on the Vine and Wine (published in \u201cBOE\u201d No. 165, on July 11, 2003)&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2827\" data-end=\"3334\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2829\" data-end=\"3334\">Vinos de Pago shall be produced and bottled by natural or legal persons who, by themselves or through their partners, own the vineyards located in the pago [\u2026] All grapes intended for Vino de Pago must come from vineyards located in the defined pago, and the wine must be produced, stored and, where applicable, aged separately from other wines. [\u2026] In the production of Vinos de Pago, a comprehensive quality system shall be implemented, to be applied from grape production to the marketing of the wines.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3336\" data-end=\"3534\">In addition to these requirements, each winery must undergo a prior inspection by the technical audit committee, and their wines must pass a vertical tasting by the board members of the Association.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3541\" data-end=\"3979\"><strong data-start=\"3541\" data-end=\"3564\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-173561\" src=\"https:\/\/pradorey.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-05-20-a-las-12.22.36-300x120.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1683\" height=\"673\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pradorey.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-05-20-a-las-12.22.36-300x120.png 300w, https:\/\/pradorey.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-05-20-a-las-12.22.36-768x308.png 768w, https:\/\/pradorey.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-05-20-a-las-12.22.36-600x241.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1683px) 100vw, 1683px\" \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2 data-start=\"3541\" data-end=\"3979\">\u2026and clarifications<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3541\" data-end=\"3979\">Although Vinos de Pago occupy the highest position in the Spanish wine quality pyramid, it must be noted that, exceptionally, there are wines that carry the commercial name &#8220;Pago&#8221; without meeting these requirements. This has an explanation: their names were registered before the aforementioned law.
