Although the recent storms might suggest otherwise, summer is just around the corner. Almost without realizing it, in just a few weeks most of us will find ourselves enjoying an aperitif by the pool or at a beachside bar, pairing our food with a refreshing drink to beat the summer heat. Or simply relaxing on a terrace in good company in one of those cities that empty out during the vacation season. Just thinking about it makes you want to open a bottle of white wine, doesn’t it?
Let’s be honest. For years, white wine was underrated. It was considered second-class compared to reds, and people believed it could only be paired with fish and seafood, mostly appealing to women. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Recent studies show that white wines are leading the growth in wine consumption in our country, with figures reaching almost double digits. And it’s not just women who are driving this golden age of white wine—studies indicate that young people are the ones enjoying it more and more. In this post, we’ll explain why.
White wine is an ideal introduction to the world of wine for many reasons.
First, because it has a lower alcohol content than reds, making it easier to drink. Second, because its higher acidity creates a greater sensation of freshness on the palate, making it a strong competitor to beer. And finally, because white wines tend to have a more pronounced fruity character, which also enhances their drinkability.
White wine is incredibly versatile.
You can enjoy a chilled glass while reading a book, but it also makes a perfect aperitif. And it pairs with much more than just the typical fish or seafood. Have you tried pairing your salads with white wine? Or one of those fantastic rice dishes found throughout Spain? White wine pairs beautifully with white meats, but also with Asian cuisine (our special Verdejo is an excellent match for sushi), pasta and pizza, or certain cheeses. And beyond that, each grape variety offers unique and surprising sensations. Verdejo is nothing like Godello. And Albariño is completely different from Chardonnay. Who said the enological richness of white wines was inferior to that of reds?
There’s a white wine for every taste.
They can be sparkling, young, lightly aged in oak (the so-called “Fumées”), barrel-fermented, sweet, or semi-sweet. Each one suits different occasions. For example, a late-harvest sweet wine is the perfect companion for a foie gras appetizer. And if you want to impress your guests in winter, we recommend preparing a hearty cocido madrileño and pairing it with a barrel-fermented white, like our PR3.
White wine is generally more affordable and accessible to almost everyone.
For just 5 or 6 euros, you can find amazing bargains like our PRADOREY Verdejo, making it an easy choice for young consumers.
It can even be made exclusively from red grapes.
That’s right! According to the surveys we conduct with visitors to our winery, El Cuentista from PRADOREY, a true Blanc de Noirs (as these wines are known), is one of the favorites among young wine lovers.
So now you know. When your summer vacation starts, make a great choice by selecting a white wine to accompany your best moments. And most importantly, toast and enjoy those moments with the people you love the most. Wine always tastes better when shared.
Cheers! 🍷
