VINTAGE 2016

PASSION

What if we made a wine like our grandparents used to make? In 2016, we started rescuing earthenware jars in old abandoned family wine cellars for what was to be our most personal project. We selected plot 119 in our vineyards, a special place in Hoyo Dornajo. We harvest the grapes with our own hands, tread the grapes with our own feet, carry out daily punch downs and get excited tasting the result. After 6 months and 23 days, we bottled the first vintage of a wine whose soul stood out above all else. El Buen Alfarero had just been born.

VINTAGE 2017

LEARNING

In 2017, nature once again showed its strength in Ribera del Duero with a frost that considerably reduced production and gave this vintage a much more robust character than usual. The grapes expressed themselves differently inside the jar and we had our doubts, so we decided to wait and learned the value of time. When 17 months and 8 days had passed, we felt again the same emotion as in the previous year. We understood that, sometimes, for things to work out the way you want them to, you have to give yourself a little more time.

VINTAGE 2018

PERSEVERANCE

The clay of these jars was teaching us many things that we could apply to other wines, so we decided to continue advancing in the project, trying more types of amphorae, other wines and other vinifications, but always keeping two jars reserved for El Buen Alfarero. In 2018, we made the wine the same way once more and, again, it was different. We waited for 9 months and 17 days for the wine to round off and show its pure character. Only then did we bottle it, and these were the first bottles to be marketed.

THE VINEYARD

la finca movil

Parcel 119 is one of our most unique vineyard areas. It is located in Hoyo Dornajo, the first plot planted by the brand’s founder, Javier Cremades de Adaro, on the estate, and reaches an altitude of over 830 meters. It is 32 years old, and in this plot, we have Tempranillo and a bit of Albillo, which we use in the production of this wine. The harvest is done manually, with an average yield of 4,000 kilos per hectare. A great vineyard to make a great wine.

CENTURY-OLD CLAY JARS

Currently, we have more than 30 clay jars rescued from abandoned wineries from various origins, such as Quismondo, Chozas de Canales, El Tiemblo, Morata de Tajuña… The largest jars have a capacity of almost five thousand liters, while the smallest hold barely 500, forming an unparalleled cellar of clay jars in the sector. Today, thanks to this project, we are participating in a European-level research to better understand what these jars contribute and how they interact with the wine throughout the different production processes. Of course, we are proud to be an example of innovation and reinvention.

HANDCRAFTED PRODUCTION

The entire process is artisanal and done as it was hundreds of years ago. We hand-pick the grapes, crush them, and place them in the jar, where they ferment for ten to fifteen days. During fermentation, we punch down the cap several times a day to macerate the must with the skins. Once fermentation is complete, we remove the wine and enter the jar to extract the remaining grape skins. When the jar is prepared again, we return the wine for aging in the same jar where it fermented. When we consider the wine to be at its perfect point, we manually bottle it and leave the bottles in the cellar until they are ready for sale, at which point we seal them with wax and affix the clay seal one by one, thus completing the work of craftsmanship.

THE RESULT

Pradorey-El-Buen-Alfarero

El Buen Alfarero is a straightforward wine that perfectly reflects the character of each vintage in every bottle. It is a fresh wine where fresh fruit dominates at first, with certain nuances that transport us to the forest, so typical of Tempranillo grapes. Over the years, the wine gains elegance, maintaining its freshness while maturing towards silkiness and finesse. A wine with a long finish, very pleasant on the palate, and with a personality that surprises everyone who enjoys it. El Buen Alfarero is purity and soul.
